Obituary for Some Beautiful Ideas

2018

Obituary for Some Beautiful Ideas is a series of paintings conceived as a frieze where all what is about to be lost, from biological life to ideas and language, could be added in a new painting ad infinitum. This iteration of five paintings was shown at the exhibition The Ages, a solo project presented at the artist-run space Dread Lounge, Los Angeles, in 2018.

Inspired by Benjamin’s Theses on the Philosophy of History, the exhibition dealt with ideas of Time, ecological catastrophe, and personal loss. The exhibition was conceived metaphorically around the concept of admonition or warning, which worked incrementally as the viewer walked through the exhibit, and explored the literary trope of oracular voices.

The depiction of eyes that witness is a recurrent motif in the artist’s work. The paintings were placed close to the series of slides The Eyes that See You which shows pictures of animals in captivity looking at the camera.
